Grade 8 to 12 timeline

What to do in each grade, from middle school to college applications.

The US school year usually starts between mid-August and early September, depending on the state, and ends in late May or June. Seasons below are approximate: fall (Sep–Nov), winter (Dec–Feb), spring (Mar–May), and summer break (Jun–Aug).

Grade 9

Grades now count. This is year one of the GPA colleges will see.

Fall · Sep–Nov

  • A low grade in grade 9 stays on the transcript, though colleges also notice improvement.

  • Colleges value steady commitment over many short ones.

    Ideas by career
  • The counselor guides class choices and later writes a recommendation, so an early hello helps.

  • Most high schools post grades, attendance, and missing work online. Ask the office for a login.

Winter · Dec–Feb

  • Many schools offer free tutoring before or after school. Asking early is normal in the US.

  • It’s fine to switch in grade 9. The goal is to find one or two things to stick with.

Spring · Mar–May

  • Colleges look at how hard the classes were, not just the grades. Balance challenge with time for activities and rest.

  • Include math every year, lab sciences, and a world language. Many selective colleges like to see several years of each.

Summer · Jun–Aug

  • Free or local options count as much as expensive programs.

    What colleges look for
  • Update it each term. It makes college applications much easier in grade 12.
